If your home has forced air heating or air conditioning that uses ductwork, air duct sealing can improve your overall energy efficiency, as well as indoor air quality. At Green Homes Long Island, we’ve seen real improvements in our customers’ well-being when our home performance professionals seal their leaky ductwork.
How Leaky Ducts Affect Home Energy Efficiency
Your home’s ductwork does the heavy lifting when heating and cooling your home. Ducts distribute conditioned air throughout your house. If your ductwork is leaking, you’re losing that expensive warm or cooled air to your attic or basement which can add up to some serious money!
Poor Indoor Air Quality from Leaky Ductwork
A duct leak moves air in both directions, in and out of the duct. These leaks can draw in and circulate all types of indoor pollutants that can affect your family’s health. Some of the pollutants that can be spread by leaky ductwork include:
Bacteria & viruses
Gases, including formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and radon
Allergens and pollens
Improve Air Quality for Better Health
When we seal your ductwork, we keep your heated and cooled air inside the duct where it belongs. If your family has respiratory illnesses like allergies and asthma, or if they catch colds too frequently, keeping your ducts free of contaminants will make a big difference!
How Do We Seal Ductwork?
Contrary to popular belief, sealing ducts is about the only thing that common duct tape can’t fix! Instead, we apply a sticky mastic sealant on the joints and connections of your ductwork and make sure that it’s insulated properly. Once your ductwork is sealed, we’ll test to ensure it maintains the proper pressure to deliver your valuable conditioned air where it’s supposed to go.
Home Energy Audit to Improve Energy Efficiency
We often find leaky ductwork as part of a home energy audit. With a range of energy efficiency programs in the Nassau and Suffolk County area, a home energy audit plus some basic improvements—including duct sealing and air sealing—often qualify for cash rebates and tax incentives. Your energy savings begin immediately!
